Design and symbolism

A golden Stafford knot occupies a red chevron on gold. The colours and arrangement draw on the heraldry of the de Stafford family.

History and use

The knot has been used by many county organisations for centuries. A public poll selected this traditional pattern in 2016. The resulting flag combines the familiar county badge with an established heraldic setting, rather than treating every earlier knot design as the same flag.
