County of Cork
Province: Munster
Harbour and river valleys opening west into Atlantic peninsulas.
Cork is Ireland’s largest geographic county, and its scale is easiest to understand through water. The Lee reaches the sea through Cork Harbour; further north the Blackwater crosses a broad inland valley; and westwards the land becomes increasingly broken by mountains, long sea inlets and peninsulas reaching into the Atlantic.
The county therefore changes steadily from harbour and fertile river country into the mountain-and-ocean landscapes of the south-west. Cork’s immense size does not produce geographical disorder: rivers organise the centre while bays and peninsulas organise the west.

County geography
River country
The Lee, Blackwater and Bandon give much of Cork its internal structure.
Their valleys create natural corridors through a county whose western and northern margins become progressively more mountainous. Cork Harbour extends the Lee system into an enormous sheltered maritime landscape.
The long south-west
West Cork changes the scale completely.
Bantry Bay and the great Atlantic peninsulas divide the coast into long fingers of mountain and sea, with islands lying beyond them. Here physical geography repeatedly dictates routes, settlement and local identity.
Beara across two counties
The Beara Peninsula also demonstrates an important geographical principle: a natural region need not coincide exactly with a county.
Beara extends across Cork and Kerry while remaining one recognisable peninsula.
