Middlesex Day
The day and its story
Middlesex Day is observed on 16 May, the anniversary of the Battle of Albuera in 1811. The date recalls the military tradition associated with the county’s regiment and the name ‘Die-hards’.
British County Flags traces selection of the date to a poll by the Friends of the County of Middlesex and documents subsequent government and civic flag-raising. The modern celebration also provides an opportunity to explore the county’s wider history beyond its military associations.
Make it your celebration
Fly or display the county flag, explore a local collection, share a family story, or bring people together around the county’s food, language, music and history. Check individual organisers for event dates and access arrangements.
