County Durham Day
The day and its story
County Durham Day falls on 20 March, St Cuthbert’s feast day. British County Flags records that the date won a public vote following adoption of the county flag.
Cuthbert’s association with the county’s religious heritage also informs the flag: his distinctive cross appears in its design. The choice brings together an established commemoration of the saint and a newer opportunity for the whole community to celebrate the county.
Make it your celebration
Fly or display the county flag, explore a local collection, share a family story, or bring people together around the county’s food, language, music and history. Check individual organisers for event dates and access arrangements.
