Design and symbolism

A cross associated with St Cuthbert extends across blue and gold halves. Its colours reverse at the horizontal division, producing a strong, balanced design.

History and use

James Moffatt and his daughters Katie and Holly created the flag, selected in a public vote. The cross connects the design with St Cuthbert; blue and gold draw on the county’s established heraldic colours. The flag was first raised at Durham Cathedral in 2013.
