Design and symbolism

A golden apple tree appears above alternating white and red horizontal bars. The tree and bars recall the heraldic associations of Appleby and Kendal.

History and use

The design derives from the county council’s 1926 arms and was promoted as a public county flag by the Westmorland Association. The arms date and the flag’s registration date are separate. Its continuing use expresses geographic county identity beyond any particular council arrangement.
