Design and symbolism

A regular pattern of gold and blue checks fills the flag. It is commonly called Warenne Checks.

History and use

The design derives from the arms of the de Warenne earls of Surrey, recorded in medieval heraldry and banners. It later became familiar through county societies and civic symbols. A coalition of local organisations supported registration of this traditional design as the county’s public flag.
