Design and symbolism

Three gold leopard faces, known locally as loggerheads, occupy blue areas separated by a broad golden chevron. Black ermine spots decorate the gold.

History and use

The design follows the county council’s banner of arms and an older emblem associated with the county town. Registration made this distinctive heraldic pattern a clearly identified public county flag. The heraldic term loggerheads refers to the faces, rather than to three complete animals.
