Design and symbolism

A gold shield bearing a brown hart sits on eight alternating blue and white waves. The hart provides a heraldic play on the county’s name.

History and use

The design is the banner of the county council’s arms, granted in 1925. The council authorised its use as a public county flag in November 2008. That permission concerns the banner; it does not make the complete coat of arms, with its crest and supporters, freely interchangeable with the county flag.
