Design and symbolism

Blue above green represents water and land. A chain crosses the centre, with a salmon above and a golden ear of barley below.

History and use

The chain recalls the Union Chain Bridge and links between Scotland and England. The salmon represents fishing and the marine environment; barley represents agriculture. Selected through a public competition, the design’s creator remained anonymous. The Registry gives a Flag Date of 14 November 2023; this should not be confused with a separately documented date of registration.

The design is listed in the UK Flag Registry. A separate, securely established registration date is not given here; design dates, public unveilings and heraldic grants are different milestones.
