Design and symbolism

A red stag stands beneath an oak tree on gold. Its antlers, tree and warm background create a distinctive woodland emblem.

History and use

The stag and oak have long represented Berkshire. Michael Drayton’s poem about Agincourt, published in 1627, describes a stag beneath an oak as the Berkshire emblem. That is evidence of the seventeenth-century account, rather than contemporary proof of a flag carried in 1415. Local organisations supported the modern registration.
