Design and symbolism

A gold chevron separates three golden lions on red. Known as Hwfa’s Banner, the design combines a bold geometric division with traditional heraldic animals.

History and use

The arms were attributed by medieval heralds to Hwfa ap Cynddelw, a twelfth-century figure associated with Anglesey. Their appearance in the work of the fifteenth-century poet Lewys Glyn Cothi provides evidence of the emblem’s earlier history; attribution does not establish that Hwfa personally flew this flag.
