Three great valleys running south to the Solway.
Dumfriesshire is organised by water and hill. Nithsdale, Annandale and Eskdale run broadly southwards through the county, separated by uplands before opening towards the low country of the Solway Firth.
That repeated valley pattern gives a large and varied county unusual coherence. Upper reaches become increasingly enclosed and mountainous; lower down, the valleys broaden into pasture and farmland. The Solway-facing south is gentler again. Dumfriesshire is therefore best understood as three great river countries descending from the Southern Uplands towards one maritime edge.

Nithsdale
The Nith provides the westernmost of the county’s principal valleys, cutting a long route from high country towards the Solway.
Its broadening lower course creates one of Dumfriesshire’s principal corridors of settlement and movement.
Annandale and Eskdale
Further east, the Annan drains another long valley towards the firth, while the Esk system gathers waters from the hill country nearer the English border.
Together they reinforce the county’s strong north–south grain: hill, valley, route and lowland repeatedly aligned in the same direction.
Solway and border country
Along the southern side, the landscape opens dramatically towards the Solway.
Dumfriesshire’s position beside England has given it a powerful Border history, but that history grew from an older physical geography of passes, valleys and crossing routes rather than defining the county itself.
