Sussex Day
The day and its story
Sussex Day is celebrated on 16 June, the commemoration associated with the translation of St Richard’s relics in 1276. It is not the anniversary of his death, which fell in April.
The modern proposal developed in 2006 and received recognition from West Sussex County Council in 2007. It has grown into a wider county celebration, with flag displays and community activities. The occasion celebrates geographic Sussex across separate council areas.
Make it your celebration
Fly or display the county flag, explore a local collection, share a family story, or bring people together around the county’s food, language, music and history. Check individual organisers for event dates and access arrangements.
