Orkney Day

The day and its story

Orkney Day is listed on 16 April, the feast day of St Magnus. Magnus’s story and the traditions surrounding his martyrdom have an enduring place in Orkney’s cultural and religious life.

The date is a saint’s commemoration used as a county day, rather than an anniversary of the creation of Orkney. The county flag provides a visual connection with this heritage; its history is explored separately in our County Flags section.

Make it your celebration

Fly or display the county flag, explore a local collection, share a family story, or bring people together around the county’s food, language, music and history. Check individual organisers for event dates and access arrangements.
