Reference, evidence, and public education for the historic counties.

Historic counties are the enduring geography. Councils are administration, lieutenancies are ceremonial – neither define the counties.

County Geography

Lincolnshire meets Yorkshire across the Humber to the north, Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire to the west, Rutland and Northamptonshire to the south-west and south, Cambridgeshire to the south, and Norfolk across the Wash to the south-east, while the North Sea forms the county’s eastern edge. The county is shaped by the Humber, the Wash, the long coast, the Lincoln Edge, and the spread of the fenlands and Wolds.

Lincolnshire is easy to recognise through its fenland, Wolds, Lincoln Edge, and long sea coast.

Places and routes

Lincoln, Boston, Stamford, Grantham, Grimsby, and Louth show the county from its central spine and southern fen side to its northern ports and Wolds district.

Connections

The county’s routes have long followed the ridge through Lincoln and Grantham, crossed the fenland south toward Boston and Stamford, and run north to Grimsby and Louth. Movement follows the same ridge, fen, coast, and Humber pattern.

County of Lincoln is the formal historical style. Lincolnshire is the normal county name, and the county’s older structure lies in Lindsey, Kesteven, and Holland, the three Parts through which it has long been read.

Lincolnshire was a shire of the Anglo-Saxon age, and its relationship between fenland, ridge, Wolds, and coast has kept the historic county unmistakable.
