CAMPAIGN UPDATE
Big changes to local government are on the horizon, and Rutland’s independent council may be abolished. That in itself is not our concern – the Campaign for Historic Counties has never taken a position on local authority structures themselves. What matters is that Rutland’s ceremonial identity is at risk, because of the way the Lieutenancies Act 1997 is framed.
Our Approach

We’re delighted that Rutland’s MP, Alicia Kearns, has launched her own campaign to protect Rutland. We stand with her 100%. Rutland is England’s smallest historic county, but it is mighty in heritage and identity. It must retain its own ceremonial status, no matter what happens to local government.
And here’s the Good News:
There is a simple way to fix this once and for all. By amending the Lieutenancies Act 1997 to bring lieutenancies back into line with the historic counties, we can:
✅ Guarantee Rutland’s ceremonial status permanently
✅ Restore the historic counties as the true framework of identity
✅ Protect all counties from the turmoil of future council reforms

One Last Thing

From the 1540s until very recently, lieutenancies were aligned to the historic counties. We’re simply calling for a return to that tradition – and a permanent safeguard for our county identities.
Rutland’s fight is every county’s fight. Together we can protect true county identities, now and for generations to come.
