A Day of Celebration for Morayshire

Morayshire County Flag

On Saturday, a crowd gathered at Elgin to witness the unveiling of Morayshireโ€™s county flag.

The Court of the Lord Lyon Honorary Vexillologist and The Flag Institute Communities Vexillologist, Philip Tibbetts, conducted the ceremony in the presence of Seymour Monro, Lord Lieutenant of Morayshire.

The green hoist and golden garb (wheat sheaf) recall the rich agricultural output of the county, whilst the wavy blue and green reference the sea and sand of the coast.

This coastal meaning in turn represents the origin of the name Moray itself, coming from the Gaelic or Pictish indicating a connection with the sea.

Nancy Robson, Vice Lord-Lieutenant for Moray, commented:

The flag was selected by a public vote after a large number of entries was received. We hope Moray will be proud of its flag and we encourage people to use the flag widely in the community.

A spokesperson for the Campaign for Historic Counties added:

What a fantastic way to celebrate the county of Morayshire! An important new badge of county identity, and we are delighted to have supported the campaign which brought it about.
